Invitation From CLF Student Conference Co-Director:

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Love.   Acceptance.  Peace.  Unity.  Hear dem words lately?  Anyone been watching the news?  Forget what they mean?  It’s easy in today’s world, ain’t it?  Ever wake up and wonder, “what’s this world coming to?”  I sure do.  Ever feel like quitting cause life is just too hard?  Yup.  Ever wonder why life is so difficult for Christian believers?  Me again.  Ever question why you ended up in law school? Hello!
It’s hard to be peaceful when I hear about Christians who are tortured and killed because of their faith.   It’s hard to be accepting of others when I hear and read about so many genocidal wars.  It’s hard to love others when I’ve had my heart broken time and time again.  It’s hard to do con law readings and study crim when I feel like there is no point to being in school.  It sure ain’t easy.
As a Christian, however, I realize it’s my calling to attempt to illustrate God’s desire for love, acceptance, peace and unity.   When Jesus Christ walked this Earth, his actions and words truly were those of the ultimate lover, accepter, peace-keeper and unifier.  Paul writes to the Church, i.e. us, that is, you AND me, and says, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3.  So although it’s hard, although I face opposition at every corner, although my actions might make zero difference in the grand scheme of life, I still gotta try, right?
Fact: Christians can make a tremendous difference in this world.  A big part of the problem, however, is that sometimes it’s just really hard to love and accept other Christians.  Sometimes instead of loving my brothers and sisters, I judge them and they judge me.  Instead of hatin on Satan, we hate on each other.  It’s a serious problem.  If I struggle to love Christians, how can I possibly love others?
Despite all opposition and despite all forces of evil, I’m still gonna try.  Gotta start somewhere, and I feel a good place to start is with other law students!!  I think we can work together and strive for the unity that Paul speaks about.  Unity between different races, nations and countries.  Unity between and within churches, communities and denominations.  Unity of relationships between friends and family.  Unity of mind, body and spirit.  And most importantly, unity with God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
I invite all those who are willing to stand up (or at least willing to stretch) to come kick it with me at the 2008 National Law Student CLF Conference, February 21-24, 2008, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.  It’s our prayer and desire to foster connection and fellowship among law students, lawyers and spiritual leaders from all across the Nation.  Collectively we can work together to strive for love, acceptance, peace and unity.  We can be 1 in Christ. I’m in, are you?  That’s what’s up.
        Peace,

A "legal Christian Conference" - One Law Student's Experience...
(2007 National Student Conference at UBC)

I flew to Vancouver with the expectation that this would be a Christian legal conference, but soon after I arrived, I realized that this was instead a legal Christian conference; that is, it was a Christian conference first, and a legal conference second.  And tried as I might, I couldn’t resist God’s heavy conviction of my heart that this erroneous perception not only existed with respect to the conference, but also extended to my perception of law school.  Through the messages of speakers and the encouragement of testimonies, I was reminded of the paramountcy of Christ in my life, and that law should be ancillary to that.
The workshops have enlightened me with an effective framework with which to defend my faith: arguments that sustain my beliefs, and uphold God’s truths in the face of challenges.  More than that though, I’ve learned of how to love without compromising; with an emphasis on winning hearts, not arguments.  With this knowledge, I feel confident to be able to effectively engage in the challenging issues of our day, and to shine in what would otherwise be a dark world.
Meeting with other brothers and sisters from across the country helped me to realize that I was not alone in my struggles, and that there is a support structure through which we can encourage and minister to each other.  The genuine care and concern was a refreshing change from the pretense and competition of law school, I am thankful that I now have a network of resources for ministry ideas on how to reach my fellow classmates.
All in all, I come away strengthened for the journey, encouraged by my fellow brethren, and empowered to make a difference.  I am thankful for your support, and look forward to the great things God will do moving forward
.
