The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 75

[R]ecognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world...

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
— Universal Declaration of Human Rights

December 10, 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In commemoration of this milestone, CLF’s 2023 Symposium on Religion, Law & Human Rights was devoted to discussing the UDHR’s protections and animating principles (including those which may have been overlooked over time), as well as its relevance in continuing to shape our understanding of human rights in Canada, and internationally. We were pleased to invite Canadian and international perspectives on a number of these themes. Selected papers presented at the Symposium will be published by LexisNexis Canada in a special collection next year.

“If there is to be perpetual peace in a world of nation states, the individuals who live in them must be free, their human rights must be respected.”
